The popular modern art of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was derived from Judo, which was one of many sports that came out of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. BJJ was officially formed in 1914 and though many Judo practitioners helped to form the art, Helio Gracie is credited as its founder.
Can-Ryu Jiu Jitsu was developed by Professor Georges Sylvain to bring a western style to traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu. “Can-Ryu” translates to “Canadian Style.”
