About
Whether you are a new student or a returning student, we are delighted to have you as part of the Jeff Bateman’s School of Karate team and hope you will have a rewarding experience in karate. This handbook is for parents and students alike and should be used as a reference throughout the training process. The handbook contains information about the school and its policies. It also explains the traditional customs and practices of the dojo, basic karate principles, as well as the skills, techniques and knowledge that you must learn to be approved to test for rank. However, you are expected to make notes on any information that is learned in the dojo but not contained in this handbook.

We highly suggest that you read and refer to your handbook frequently.
It should be brought to class every night so that:

You can refer to your notes and information,
Instructors can determine what skills or techniques you need to learn, and
Instructors can signoff on skills and techniques that you have learned for your next test.
There are different levels of classes, junior beginner or intermediate, adult, and advanced. Regardless of belt rank, those students who demonstrate the proper attitude and proficiency will attend the level of class that is determined to be appropriate by Kyoshi Bateman. Preferably, training should be three nights a week because progress is faster than training only once a week. You should also practice at home. If you have a full-length mirror, you can practice more efficiently by watching the movements as you perfect them.

Success in karate requires practice just as in other sport activities, and practice time should be increased as belt rank increases. The more you train the better you will become. As the great Vince Lombardi once said, The only place that success comes before work is in the dictionary!” Parents are encouraged to talk with Kyoshi about any successes and problems a student may have outside of karate. If parents and students work with Kyoshi as a team, karate can be a rich and rewarding experience for all. I look forward to working with you to reach this goal. We are a family-oriented school and value your support. Parties for special occasions may be planned at the dojo in advance.

Benefits from Martial Arts Training
Self-Confidence, Self-Esteem, Self-Control,
Personal Fitness, Child Development, and Weight Control

Many people misunderstand what Karate is. They think that it is what they see on TV or in the movies, kicking, punching, and yelling. What they don’t realize is that Karate is physically, spiritually, & emotionally good for them.

No other activity provides the combination of benefits like Karate does. Participation in our programs will give you results in self-confidence, self-esteem, self-control, personal fitness, child development, and weight control.

Now is the time to get started. “Don’t Put Off Tomorrow What You Can Do Today.”

For our children we work on their attention span and keep a close eye on their grades in school. We strongly emphasize that school and their studies come first then Karate. Students bring in a copy of their report card so we can see how they are doing in school. This is where our “Honor Roll Club” comes in.
