Welcome to Lovato Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Mixed Martial Arts! Lovato's has been in business for over 25 years, providing the residents of Oklahoma City with world-class martial arts instruction.

Started by Rafael Lovato Sr., the school began as an accredited Jeet Kune Do (JKD) school, focusing on Boxing, Thai Boxing, and Filipino Martial Arts, under former Bruce Lee student, Richard Bustillo. Rafael Lovato Jr. followed in his father’s footsteps and is now the full-time owner and operator of Lovato's, as well as being a world-class competitor, instructor, and coach.

Lovato’s was inspired by a love of the martial arts, particularly BJJ, and the desire to bring fitness, self-defense and valuable life skills into your life. Whether you’re 4 or 44, it’s not easy living in this crazy world these days, as we all face a lot of stress and pressure.

Rafael Lovato was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in June of 1983. Following the influence of his father, Rafael began studying martial arts when he first started walking.

Rafael’s path began by studying Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do Concepts, Escrima, Boxing, and Thai Boxing under his father and Richard Bustillo. Rafael was very competitive, and he soon held titles in Escrima and was well on his way to a promising boxing career.

At the early of age of 13, Rafael found his passion when his father introduced him to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). After early competition success, Rafael made a serious commitment to BJJ at the age of 15.

In August of 2004, shortly after turning 21, Rafael became the youngest American at that time to receive a black belt in BJJ. In receiving his black belt, Rafael also accomplished another feat, as he and his father became the first American father and son black belts.

Rafael has continued to make history in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, becoming the most decorated American BJJ competitor today. In 2007, Rafael achieved the incredible feat of winning the four most prestigious BJJ events all in a row.

He became the first American to win the Brazilian National Championships (Brasileiro) at the Black Belt level and the 2nd American, after BJ Penn, to win the World Championships as a Black Belt.

These accomplishments earned Rafael the prestigious BJJ Competitor of the Year Award for 2007. Additionally, Rafael is one of only a few Americans to ever be featured on the cover of the famous GRACIEMAG.

In 2009, Rafael was honored for his accomplishments when he was inducted into the prestigious Grapplers Quest Hall of Fame.

Rafael is currently a Middleweight contender for Bellator’s MMA division.
